The
Nutrition program was started by The United Methodist Church, North
Katanga, with funding from the Methodist Church in Switzerland during a
food scarcity crisis in 1982. Its mission is to provide nutritional
education for parents and meal-suppliments for high-risk children.
Over the years 8,235 children have been assisted by this program.
- Girls: 3,500
- Boys: 4,735
- Surviving: 6,750
- Deceased: 415
- Still in program: 535
- Left region: 405
The program currently has a well-contructed center in the Katuba II
section of Kamina and two satelite centers.
During the recent war in Congo, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on
Relief) sent shipments of corn flour, beans, sugar, salt, and milk.
Presently, the nutrition program’s sole source of support is the Swiss
Mission Board, the mission arm of the Methodist Church of Switzerland,
which sends $80/month for food. The program is struggling to continue
and prays it will receive additional financial support.
The program would like to create their own farm that would grow soy
beans, corn, beans, peanuts, rice, etc. along with the constuction of a
depot to store the harvest.
