He went
to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them.
Then he put him
on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.-Luke
10:34

The United Methodist Church of North Katanga prides
itself in addressing the spiritual, intellectual, and physical needs of
the entire community. Because of limited government medical care, The
United Methodist Church is a major source of medical care in this
region. We operate clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, and nursing schools,
whose challenges include cholera, tuberculosis, malaria, river
blindness, AIDs, and malnutrition. During the cholera epidemic of 2001
in Katanga area, The United Methodist Church was flying medicines all
over the region. Recently, the North Katanga UMC was selected to distributed over $14 million in medicines throughout the Congo. This was a collaborative effort of several diverse organizations, including UMCOR, which served as the delivery agency, St. Paul's School of Theology, Kansas City, Mo.; The United Methodist Church of North Katanga; US Department of Defense; Islamic Relief USA; United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR); and Interchurch Medical Assistance (IMA).
Another exciting recent venture in healthcare is the Kamina Vision Initiative, a joint venture of the The Stephenville (Texas) Lions Club and the Lubumbashi(Congo) Doyen Lions Club, working with the United Methodist Church in Kamina. This project has provided vision testing equipment, training for local vision workers and donated eyeglasses.
Kabongo Hospital, a 120-bed facility located over 100 kilometers north
of Kamina, recently received all new sheets and mattresses, a
generator, and a water pump as a result of support from the church.
Lupandilo Nursing School trains women and men in comprehensive medical
support and the Shungu Clinic and Maternity Center, located in the
former Abandoned Children’s Center in Kamina, provides care for
low-risk births and much needed prenatal care. In addition to these
main facilities, we support our clinics/pharmacies in comunities such
as Kanene, Nyembo Umpungu, Luena, Bukama, Malemba, Kabulo Kisanga,
Amcoro, Kabalo, Nyunzu, Kalemi, Mulongo, Manono, Moba, Kongolo,
Kitenge, Lubudi, etc. These clinics are mostly self-sufficient, using
visitation fees to support themselves.
Construction on Kamina Hospital, a massive undertaking located next to
Lupandilo Nursing School, was halted due to the violence in our country
from 1996 to 2001. Now that peace has returned, we wish to raise funds
to complete the buildings, purchase medical equipment, and hire
highly-qualified doctors.
