Booth Memorial Library was initiated in 1994 by an
executive committee decision under the leadership of Bishop Ngoy Kimba
Mwenze wa Kadilo. It was officially opened July 11, 1997 by Bishop
Ntambo Nkulu Ntanda in the home of missionary Ken Vance. Originally in
Lwena, the book collection was moved to the ground floor of the
Episcopal office in Kamina in 1998.
The library is open three days per week and run by a volunteer
librarian. There are not funds to update the small collection with any
recently published books or books by Congolese authors. There is the
additional challenge of locating and shipping books.
Dream:
Our librarian’s dream is to receive funding to purchase equipment found
in modern libraries (photocopier, computer, video and DVD player, audio
equipment, etc.) in addition to the kinds of books that would attract a
healthy flow of visitors. He also dreams of being able to update and
expand the historical displays in the library. With enough start-up
funds, part of the library’s space could be turned into a Christian
bookstore (it is currently difficult to find a Bible for sale in
Kamina). The librarian would also like to build relationships with
libraries in other parts of Congo and the world.
Librarian : Rev. Muleka Pingwe wa Banze Robert.
